SPIRIT Award Nominations

These are just a few examples of SPIRIT nominations written by former patients or co-workers.

To Whom It May Concern:
I am writing to express my appreciation for the excellent care that was given to me by your physical therapist,Bob Bickel, at home after my right total knee replacement at Good Samaritan Hospital. Having had a previous total hip replacement, as well as a revision, I am experienced in having home health physical therapy, which has not always been positive. With this go around, Bob was excellent in his demeanor and treatment. I can honestly say that it is the first time that I have actually felt better after therapy rather than in more pain. When I went to outpatient PT at Union Memorial after two weeks with Bob, the therapists there were amazed at my progress. I give the credit to Bob for his excellent care and advice.

Please convey my appreciation to him.

Sincerely,
Grateful Patient

Dear Ms. Bernache,
This is simply a note of appreciation for the services I received from your PT, Marilyn Jolly. Her knowledge and professionalism is outstanding. She is an outstanding representative and a credit to your organization. I was very lucky to have her to help me back from my hip surgery.

Thank you,
Grateful Patient

I am writing to express my appreciation for the wonderful care I was given by Michael Blondell. My family and I were all treated so nicely by him. Michael was very professional and ready to offer suggestions that made recovery easier. He answered all our questions and encouraged me to set goals of daily improvement. He is a true professional and cares about his patients.

Thank you,
Grateful Patient

The purpose of this note is to express my appreciation for the in-home nursing and physical therapy care I received recently.

Angie Ruecker was extremely capable and most pleasant to work with.

Not enough can be said about Debbie Dudas, therapist. She displayed the utmost respect and patience to both me and my husband, a therapist "wannabe." I give her knowledge, enthusiasm and sense of humor credit for the rehabilitation success I am presently enjoying and expect to continue in the future.

I'm sure you understand that I hope to never require your services again - in the same breath I will readily recommend you to others.

Sincerely,
Grateful Patient

Patricia Pappas, affectionately known as "Trish," exemplifies teamwork on a continuous basis. Trish not only sees her patients for Anne Arundel, but also helps with patients at the Owings Mills office. Trisha is always willing to open cases for both offices, and never complains about her heavy schedule. Trish is always willing to go the extra mile.

A patient called in to say that she was so sorry she had to be discharged because Sally Hewson, RN. had been so wonderful. She actually cried on the phone because she thought Sally was so wonderful and was really going to miss her.

Patient called in tears because she was being discharged and because Mark Jenkins, PTA, had been so wonderful. She was sorry she was being discharged and was really going to miss him.

To Whom It May Concern:
I write without being asked in acknowledgement of Harold DeShields. He has been my homecare nurse for the last six weeks. He is superb. A star.

I need you to know he is even more than that. A superb teacher, he makes everything understandable to a layperson. He so easily explains the intricacies of the human body and the IV antibiotic treatments when asked. He is always on call when we need him or have a question. He makes my days and my caregiver-husband's days so much better.

He had not gone on vacation, I think, for a year; as he does not want to leave his patients. His wife requested a weekend away. He complied for four days. He called the evening he returned.

Let me suggest that you need to give him a long paid vacation ... and a huge bonus!

Please remember my writing this is not known to Harold.

Sincerely,
Grateful Patient

Andrea Pumphrey consistently represents the SPIRIT values of the VNA. The most recent incident was the weekend of 5/1-5/3. Service: in order to meet the needs of our patients, Andrea was in the office until 11 p.m. on Friday and 1 a.m. on Saturday. Respect: This weekend was particularly hectic, but Andrea called each patient and hospital staff member necessary to coordinate the smooth transition from hospital to home. She spoke to everyone professionally, and you could never tell from her voice how much pressure she was under.Patient first: Since it was the weekend, other support staff was not available. It was only Andrea and one pharmacist. Because of her dedication to patients, she took on the role of three other departments and was able to coordinate the start of care of seven patients! As I stated earlier, Andrea Pumphrey, CSS, is a dedicated worker that always goes above and beyond what is expected. She treats patients with the utmost respect and always represents the SPIRIT values. Her work and dedication should be commended.

Dear Ms. Bernache:

We felt it necessary to acknowledge with appreciation the immense and valuable aid your agency and therapists have been to our family. It was such a relief, after a year-long search to obtain assistance for our mother. Due to our location and that of mother's medical personnel, our quest was exasperating.

Our sincerest thank you goes to John "Landy" Askew and Kelly Krupinski. What outstanding help they were! Their dedication and expertise have enabled Mom to regain abilities we felt were lost. The family was very impressed with the skill and professionalism exhibited. A stranger coming into one's home can be quite disconcerting. However, Landy and Kelly put everyone quickly at ease, got down to work and accomplished very satisfying results.

Thank you again for resolving our dilemma and to Landy and Kelly for their much appreciated hard work and dedication, and for their perseverance with the long commute.

Most Sincerely,
Grateful Family Member
