The flu (also known as influenza) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus. On average, 5 to 20 percent of Americans get the flu each year. It can cause mild to severe illness, with some serious cases resulting in emergency hospital treatment or death. Senior citizens, young children, and individuals with certain health conditions, are at greater risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.
MedStar Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) partners with organizations across the Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia region to provide on-site vaccination events for individuals who want protection from the flu virus.

2017-18 Flu Mist Statement
The Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) and the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) does not recommend the Flu Mist (also known as the “nasal spray” flu vaccine or LAIV) for use in any population for 2017-18. As a result, MedStar Visiting Nurse Association (VNA) will not offer Flu Mist during the upcoming flu season. We apologize for the inconvenience.
The CDC and the ACIP continues to recommend annual flu vaccination, with either the inactivated influenza vaccine (IIV) or recombinant influenza vaccine (RIV), for everyone six months and older.
For more information, see the ACIP Summary of Recommendations.
